Description of Program

If you are looking for a challenging, exciting internship with an opportunity for growth both personally and professionally, your search has ended. This internship provides an outstanding opportunity for 7 motivated veterinarians to gain exposure to complex referral cases, emergency and critical care medicine, and high-quality general practice. Your internship experience will provide you with exposure to cases and learning experiences equivalent to 3 years of private practice work.

Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Service (VSES) is a 14,000 square foot state of the art facility that houses both a multi-specialty and a 24 hour emergency/critical care hospital. We provide the latest technology for diagnostics and therapy, including flexible endoscopy, ultrasound, color-flow Doppler echocardiography, MRI and radioactive iodine. Through collaborative efforts with local medical facilities we also have access to CT (helical) and radiation therapy services. There is a full range of orthopedic, soft tissue, neurologic and ophthalmic surgery performed daily, including minimally invasive surgical procedures, TPLOs, total hip arthroplasty, reconstructive surgery and phacoemulsification. Rehabilitation therapy services, including underwater and dry treadmills, therapeutic ultrasound, neuromuscular electrostimulation, laser therapy and other physical intervention modalities are available either on-site or at the Animal Rehabilitation Center of Rochester. We also have an in-house, full-service laboratory.

Our staff of specialists includes 2 internists, 1 oncologist, 1 ophthalmologist, 3 surgeons, 1 radiologist, and 1 criticalist. We also have a cardiologist and neurologist that provide part time consultation. The emergency/critical care service is staffed by 1 ABVP boarded and 5 internship-trained attending DVMs with extensive experience in urgent critical care. Our licensed technical staff has several ECC and anesthesia certified licensed veterinary technicians. We also have 1 surgical intern, 1 internal medicine intern and 2 surgical residents.

Interns will rotate through internal medicine, surgery, oncology, critical care, radiology and ophthalmology services under the direct supervision of board certified specialists. They will also rotate through emergency and have exposure to cardiology and neurology on a limited basis. Other rotations may be available on-site as new staff is added, or offsite (externships), depending on intern areas of interest and our ability to foster such a program. During each specialty rotation you will have direct supervision from a specialist. As your skills and knowledge base improve, your responsibilities will increase. Emergency/Critical Care rotations are divided into day and over-night shifts. During this rotation you will have primary case responsibility with direct mentorship from an attending DVM and Criticalist. Approximately 1/3 of your internship will be spent on these services.

The Animal Hospital of Pittsford, the flagship hospital of Monroe Veterinary Associates, occupies a 14,000 square foot facility and hosts the general practice portion of the internship. Rotations at this hospital provide experience in the operations of a progressive general practice, under the supervision of high quality general practitioners.

Through our collaborative efforts with Lollypop Farm, the local Humane Society, you will have an opportunity to participate in their spay-neuter program. You will be directly supervised by the staff DVM of the Humane Society during your time there. You may also gain experience with elective feline surgeries by volunteering to assist at the trap-neuter-release feral cat program that is operated at one of our satellite facilities monthly or low cost spay/neuter clinics that we support at Rochester Animal Services.

To complete your educational opportunities you will be expected to attend and actively participate in daily clinical case-based, journal review, and didactic rounds. As time permits you are encouraged to attend continuing education lectures sponsored by local and regional organizations and to attend 1 national CE conference. Interns are required to present two formal seminars to the specialists, general practitioners and their internmates.

hese educational opportunities, combined with your broad clinical exposure are designed to prepare you for application for a residency in your field of interest or a fast-paced, advanced private practice or emergency hospital. VSES has an excellent record of placing motivated interns into residencies across the country. We have matched interns into residencies in internal medicine, surgery, emergency/critical care medicine, ophthalmology, oncology, zoological medicine, pathology, neurology and dermatology.

Intern compensation includes a salary (paid weekly), paid time off, single policy health care coverage, liability (malpractice) insurance, AVMA dues, and dues to the NYSVMS/ GVVMA.
